The Norwegian Centre for Trustworthy AI
We are in the midst of a technological shift that is shaping our society for generations to come. Artificial intelligence offers enormous opportunities – but also a host of questions related to ethics, truth, transparency, and responsibility.
To meet the challenges we are facing, a national research centre for artificial intelligence has been established. The centre is called Trust – The Norwegian Centre for Trustworthy AI, and is led by AI experts at the University of Oslo, SINTEF, and the Norwegian Computing Center, who together form the core of the centre’s research environment. Surrounding them is a broad network of Norwegian and international research institutions that contribute specialized expertise in technology, law, social sciences, and philosophy.
The centre brings together leading expert communities to ensure that AI is developed and used in a way that is safe, fair, and trustworthy. The centre will also contribute new knowledge and technology, support innovation, and conduct research on AI’s impact on society – including areas such as democracy, the rule of law, and the environment.
The goal is simple: Greater trust in the technology that shapes our everyday lives.
Present at the opening of the centre were Minister of Research and Higher Education Sigrun Aasland and Minister of Digitalisation Karianne Tung.
They took part in a panel discussion together with, among others, Professor Yoshua Bengio, one of the world’s most cited researchers and who last year was included on TIME Magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people. In recent years, the professor has become a prominent voice warning about the development of AI and the dangers of losing control over the technology.
In Trust, Bengio will now join as a partner and work closely with the researchers at the centre.

We are very pleased with all the design work Tank has created for us. The PowerPoint templates, in particular, are being used extensively these days. The launch itself exceeded all expectations!
