Dvein to our design workshop

We are VERY proud to tell that motion graphic gurus Dvein will be main guests at our design workshop Design vs Music.

Dvein is a spanish studio of illustrators, art directors and 3D animators consisting of Fernando Dominguez Valencia, Zaragoza Teo Guillem and Carlos Pardo. Their motion graphics work is a mixture of real and imaginary worlds, both conceptually and technically. The studio started out working for Kyle Cooper (Imaginary Forces), creating titles for Spider-Man 3 and more. Its international recognition, under the name Dvein, came through the creation of jobs like Diesel Liquid Space, and the creation of credits for some of the major festivals of digital art, such as OFFF, F5 and Tocame.

Jarle Klepp is back on the scene

After their success with Mannen som elsket Yngve (“The Man who Loved Yngve”), Motlys are filming the life of Jarle Klepp once again, this time in Bergen where he’s now studying literature. One day a letter arrives from the Police which asks him to take a DNA test…

Tank created the teaser poster, badges and banners for the film festival in Haugesund where film folk and enthusiasts got a sneak preview. The film premieres in February.

Annual reports in Graphis

Three annual reports designed by Tank have been chosen for the forthcoming book “Graphis’ 100 Best Annual Reports 2011″. The reports cherry-picked by the jury are Rocksource, Cardinal Foods and IT Fornebu.

Design for free 2010, for Bellona

After considering many razor-sharp applicants we have finally chosen a winner. This year Tank’s annual sponsored project, “Design for free”, has been awarded to the environmental foundation Bellona, after awarding the prize to humanitarian organisations for the past two years. We congratulate the winners and look forward to working with a professional and results-oriented foundation which we strongly believe in.

Destinasjon Fornebu opens for the public on Tuesday June 8th

Destination Fornebu is an exhibition centre devoted to the new Statoil building and the beautiful surroundings at Fornebu. Here you can see what the 65,000 square metre building will look like, watch walkthrough videos of the building and get a feel for its overall scale. Using words and pictures the exhibition gives you an insight into life at Fornebu, the environment, the landscape, and a glimpse of Fornebu’s history.

Over at Tank we are proud to have designed the exhibition, a project which has been both demanding and fun.

Visuelt Award “Næringslivsprisen”

Our packaging design for Halvors Tradisjonsfisk won “Næringslivsprisen” at this years Norwegian Visuelt Award in Oslo.

This winter Tank has worked tirelessly on various environmental measures for health and safety, the office environment, energy consumption, purchasing and use of resources, waste and emissions management, transport, and environmental accountability. We finally reached our goal and can now call ourselves a ‘Miljøfyrtårn’ (a ‘lighthouse for the environment’ in English) – a nationally certificated business run in an environmentally-friendly way with the documentation to prove it!

Dieline Award 2010 to 70N

Chicago, Fuse Conference: We recieved one of the world´s highest awards in packaging design, in the category “non-alchoholic beverage”, the water bottle 70N, Pure Arctic Water, got third price in competition with more than 800 packaging designs world wide.
– This is great fun, says Bjørn Viggo Ottem. In addition to recieving the prize, we get to meet lots of the great talents in packaging design, which is very inspiring.
– There´s an interest for Norwegian design in general over here, says Jens K Styve. – Both artists and customers are well represented at this conference, so hopefully the price will result in some international assignments.

New Client

Tank is proud to have won the competitive tender “General agreement for Graphic Design” along with four other agencies, as announced by the Norwegian Directorate for Education and Training. We have now entered a three-year contractual agreement with the Directorate, and we look forward to working with them.

Klimakur 2020 has launched

On February 17th it was finally ready – the report which explains the measures required to reduce Norwegian greenhouse gas emissions. The government group Klimakur (“ClimateCure” in English) received a lot of praise from various organisations, researchers and politicians alike. Erik Solheim, Minister for the Environment and Development, believes politicians now have a brilliant starting point for their future work in reducing Norwegian greenhouse gas emissions.

The Climate and Pollution Agency has pioneered the work, which has been completed in collaboration with the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, Statistics Norway and the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.

Tank was responsible for the visual identity, and will deliver the 300-page long climate report in March.

Record sales for TIFF

This years Tromsø International Film Festival is over and the ticket sales passed 56.000. That means it is now the biggest film festival in Norway, and actually one of the biggest cultural events in the country.

TIFF screens challenging quality films for a local, national and international audience. Tank has had the pleasure of creating the identity for this event the last four years, below are some images of 2010, the 20th TIFF.

New designer at Tank

We are developing our team and have employed Sunniva Djupedal de Villiers as part of our design team. She has come straight from New York where she has been working for the New York Times and Exposure USA, amongst others. Sunniva has a BFA in Visual Communication from Kunsthøyskolen i Oslo, and an MFA in Design from the School of Visual Arts, New York. “We’re really looking forward to working with Sunniva, who has bags of talent and wide experience within our discipline. Spring 2010 looks like it’s going to be busy so she will be a very important part of the team going forward”, says creative director Ina Brantenberg.

Praise from Farmand

Tank submitted three annual reports to the Farmand Prize, all of which received good feedback. Both Entra Eiendom, Rocksource and IT Fornebu scored highly in the Idea and Design categories. Here are a few extracts:

Entra Eiendom: “The report also boasts a number of excellent graphic devices. The photography has a consistent visual style, and when combined with frames and rounded corners it helps to give the report a great deal of personality. The rhythm and structure is also quite good, and important information has been visualised in an exciting way. The articles which describe selected projects have been thoroughly considered, and the graphs and tables display the same high level of craftmanship as the rest of the report. The jury also appreciated the amount of space devoted to the diagrams which supplement the main content.”

IT Fornebu: “The report is really beautiful and the illustrations are both relevant and playful. It is also well composed and there is a fantastic rhythm and structure. In terms of print production, this report is in a class of its own. There are a great deal of fine details in the illustrations which virtually took the jury’s breath away. The hand-drawn strokes combined with metallic varnish is a first-class example of what can be achieved with print!”

Rocksource: “The report we received from Rocksource can be best described as cool and masculine. The layout and typography has been beautifully arranged in two columns throughout the report. An abundance of white space ensures the text and core messages are accessible. Worth special mention are the black pages which introduce a new topic. These are very well designed in terms of colour, form and composition. In conclusion this is a beautiful report which contains many excellent graphic qualities.”

Klimakur 2020

“Norwegian greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 15-17 million tonnes by 2020.” The group Klimakur 2020 will be drawing up the plans to achieve this ambitious target for climate change. The full mission statement will be complete in February 2010. The Environmental Protection Department has put the Norwegian Pollution Control Authority (SFT) in charge of the final report for Klimakur 2020. The report will surely ooze quality and finesse, since it will of course be designed by Tank!

Customs and Excise chose Tank

Tank was given the task to develop new recruitment material for the Customs and Excise Directorate. The government department wants to present themselves as an exciting and progressive employer for newly-qualified academics. To begin with Tank has created exhibition graphics which will be used at recruitment fairs and the like.

Pentaward to Halvors

Our Work for Halvors Tradisjonsfisk received a silver medal at Pentawards 2009. – We are proud and happy, this proves that what we can make an impact, also abroad, says Bjørn Viggo Ottem at Tank Design in Tromsø.

Pentawards is the biggest worldwide competition exclusively devoted to packaging design. It is open to everybody in all countries who are associated with the creation and marketing of packaging. Packaging design from the world over created or brought out in 2008 will be judged by a likewise international jury that will select the winners in accordance with the creative quality of the work submitted. Apart from prize-giving, Pentawards’ mission is the promotion of packaging design with companies, the press, the economic and political authorities and the public in general, throughout the world.

National Museum at Vestbanen

Statsbygg (Public Construction and Property, Norway) has initiated an Open Planning and Design Competiton for a New Museum Complex for the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design at Vestbanen, Oslo. Tank designed the Visual Identity for this competition.

New smrprty

The new Smrprty-beer is now being rolled out to the stores.

Smrprty has so far been unchanged since the first release in 2004. At that time it got lots of attention and appeared in several design books and magazines. In addition it received the highest Norwegian design award: Merke For God Design. The jury said: “(…) one of the most creative solutions ever used in the Norwegian brewery trade”. Smrprty has been an echonomical success since the first year.

Election campaign for Venstre

Venstre (The Norwegian Liberal Party) has recruited Tank and Mediafront to develop the visual identity for the coming election in Sept. ’09. (Tank previously developed Venstre’s main visual identity back in ’95, then updated it in ’02.) The challenge is to communicate to a wide audience, using all the media channels available to an election campaign. «We have a challenging yet very interesting project ahead of us», says designer Øystein Flakstad. Monica Kvinge (Tank’s project manager) adds that Venstre has come up with a good strategy for a successful campaign. “We’re really looking forward to getting started”, she says.

TIFF 2009

Once again it’s time for us to enjoy the largest film festival in Norway: Tromsø International Fim Festival.
This is the third time Tank has designed the visual Identity of the festival. During this event, employees from both our offices (Oslo and Tromsø), will come together and take part in this joyful event : )

James has arrived

Our new web designer James Mckay has finally moved all his belongings from Edinburgh, got himself installed in Oslo, and started working at our office i Sagveien. It proved to be a bit of challenge to get the necessary forms and paper work in order first, but all is now settled. We are very glad to have you in our team, James!

Joining forces with Commando Group

On a new project for the Norwegian Directorate of Health, Tank has joined forces with Commando Group, the Oslo-based design agency well known for their excellent team of illustrators. Toghether we will design and illustrate a colourful set of leaflets, informing parents on «Children and safety».

The European Wergeland Centre

The Ministry of Education and Research has chosen Tank to create a visual identity for The European Wergeland Centre. The Centre will operate in cooperation with the Council of Europe, and begin its work in Autumn 2008. It will function as a European resource centre on education for intercultural understanding, human rights and democratic citizenship.
